The “La Castellina” winery originates from the Ancient Estates of the noble Squarcialupi family, settled in Chianti since 1200.
Today it is owned by the Bojola-Targioni family, who with great commitment and passion have transformed the winemaking reality of the company, introducing innovative techniques while respecting the Chianti traditions.
The farm is spread over the south-west side of the hill, which slopes down from the medieval village of Castellina in Chianti towards the locality of "La Ferrozzola", with an extension of about 140 hectares, 30 of which are planted with vineyards and 10 with olive groves.
On the Chiantigiana road that crosses Castellina in Chianti, there is the Winery with direct sale, while the aging cellar is located in the historic center, in the basement of the “Palazzo Squarcialupi”(15th century). Anciently used as a noble stately home, it houses the elegant "Hotel Palazzo Squarcialupi" on the upper floors and the "Taverna Squarcialupi" restaurant and wine shop on the lower floors.
The Chianti Classico wines of the Farm La Castellina have an intense ruby color, with garnet-red tones for the Reserve in its full maturity.
The fruity and persistent perfumes, vaguely spiced, recall the red bay fruits with notes of Cinnamom. These wines are particularly harmonious in their various gustatory components, revealing wild fruit scents and iris which develop towards agreeably tannic notes and spices such as pepper and cinnamon.
La Castellina however is not only the Chianti Classico, and the range of its products is completed by white and rosé wines, which are fresh and pleasant, and by the austere and intense Super Tuscans, thus expressing the wine vocation of these lands and Vin Santo, which is also produced in the rare version obtained from red grapes, the Eye of Pernice. In the land, characterized by its high altitude, La Castellina produces a prestigious Extra Virgin Olive Oil.
The farm is located on the South west side of the valley that from Castellina in Chianti goes down towards “La Ferrozzola” and “Il Monte”.
The center of the Fattoria La Castellina is “La Ferrozzola”, formerly used as dwellings by the sharecroppers of the farm, today it is an Holiday Farmhouse finely restructured and equipped with high levels of comfort.
At less than 500 meters from the town centre, but still completely plunged in the generous countryside of the Chianti, the Ferrozzola is an ideal place for growing vineyards as well as for the regeneration of mind and body. Located in a valley at the bottom of the hill where the ancient borough of Castellina is, the Ferrozzola is surrounded by vineyards and olive groves. It is one of the scenic viewpoints from where you can admire the medieval fortress and westwards, when days are clear, you will see as far as the towers of San Gimignano and sometimes even Volterra.
